Montserrat’s Speaker Engages in Key Parliamentary Discussions in London

Last week, the Honourable Speaker of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly, Mrs. Marjorie Smith, attended the annual Commons and Overseas Territories Speakers’ Conference 2025 in London. She was accompanied by Dr. Judith Baker, Director and Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, and Ms. Kei-Retta Farrell, Government of Montserrat Representative to the United Kingdom.

The conference gathered Speakers from across the Commonwealth and Overseas Territories to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping parliamentary democracy. Discussions included key topics such as artificial intelligence, legislative resilience, and digital documentation, reflecting the growing emphasis on technology and governance.

During her visit, Speaker Smith held a bilateral meeting with Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons, where they addressed Montserrat’s geothermal energy ambitions and upcoming plans to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruption.

The Speaker also joined fellow representatives for a special audience with His Majesty The King and attended the Buckingham Palace Garden Party, celebrating public service and parliamentary leadership. 

Montserrat’s participation in these significant forums underscores its commitment to modernising legislative systems and strengthening its engagement with UK and international partners.
